What's So Special About Aerating?

Hibu Websites • Apr 21, 2020

Lawn professionals aerate, and you should, too.

The pros know that there is more to a gorgeous lawn than proper mowing and fertilizing. The difference between average-looking grass and a verdant, carpet-like lawn is making sure that nutrients can reach the soil beneath your grass. Aeration is a critical step because it allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch.

Should you or shouldn't you?

  • Does your grass see a lot of traffic? Kids and pets  contribute to soil compaction.
  • Is your grass near a recent construction project where the soil is compacted and nutrient depleted?
  • Is the thatch greater than one-half inch thick at the soil level?
  • Has it been over a year since the last time you aerated?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you should aerate.
Call us to reserve an aerator.

Tips for success.

  • In our growing zone (USDA Zone 7),  aeration should be done in the early spring or fall to give your lawn an opportunity to heal itself and fill in bald spots before the relatively harsher conditions of summer or winter.
  • If you need to fertilize or overseed, aerate first to allow the seed and nutrients to penetrate the lawn.
  • Make sure the soil is moist enough before you start. Attempting to aerate dry soil will result in frustration and a poorly plugged lawn. Wait until the day after a good shower, or water your lawn before beginning.
  • Make multiple passes over the areas that are the most compacted.
  • After aerating, allow the soil plugs to dry and then break them up by running them over with a lawn mower.

Alternatives to aerating?

Sure, there are other ways to achieve a lush, green lawn, but we don't recommend them.

In recent weeks, many of you have come to appreciate the wisdom of the above proverb. The Buncombe County "Stay at Home" order means everyone is spending much more time at home...in view and earshot of the neighbors, who are also home.
